The 2018 GIN Conference

This year's theme: A Movement Starts With You

GIN CONFERENCE 2018: ‘AN ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE’

Over one hundred students gathered to discuss the world’s latest issues and present their emotions about recent events at the Global Issues Network (GIN) Conference in Washington, D.C. on March 12-13.
The conference was held at Funger Hall at the George Washington University campus and hosted by students from Washington International School, School Without Walls, and Bullis. The day was comprised of student-led Global Villages(discussion sessions) as well as presentations of their choice in front of small groups of students. There were also special guest appearances from several different organizations presenting a key aspect of their organization or company.
‘It seems like a good turn out, a lot of people are coming. I knew immediately it was going to be a great conference,’ WIS 9th grader, David Allen said.

A Farm in a Food Truck - GIN's 2018 Partnership with Rock Creek Food Company

As soon as I looked at the Rock Creek Food Company menu I was excited to meet Slavko Totev, the caterer for this year’s GIN Conference. From apricot chicken sausage sandwiches served with his Grandma Tzutzi’s tomato sauce, which is roasted for ten hours, to a seasonal salad with quinoa, buckwheat and seasonal vegetables, it was not the sort of food I’d expected for a high school conference or from a food truck. The more research I did, the more impressed I was. In the food truck industry, specializing in handmade sausages is difficult due to obvious time and space constraints while serving customers, so selling the sausages is a feat in itself.
On top of that, the Washington Post describes the Hellasausage, the pork sausage option, as “one of the best bites on the streets of Washington”, and the chicken sausage as “a small chamber piece all its own, a sausage that accents its earthier elements with high notes of dried apple and ginger.” Doing something difficult and doing it well is Rock Creek Food Company’s forte. And as I interviewed Totev on his culinary background and beliefs, it was clear to see why.

GIN CONFERENCE: A MUST-ATTEND EVENT

On March 12th-13th, over a hundred students gathered at George Washington University to discuss the worlds current issues, and express their thoughts and emotions on the complex subjects seemingly taking over our world at the 2018 Global Issues Network(GIN) Conference.
The GIN Conference discussed the nature of humans and current societal predicaments through small group discussions and keynote addresses.
The day was comprised of student held Global Villages, which are mini group projects which touch on current events occurring in today’s society; as well as individual student displays and lectures in front of a large audience. Specifically, the conference touched on gun violence in America, the flu epidemic, and other social dilemmas which were discussed within their respective Global Villages during the event.
The event was fascinating, and very interactive, as it dealt with issues which are in need of immediate attention from the general public, and offered great funds for a future project planned out by the winning Global Village.

GIN ORGANIZERS IMPROVISE WHEN FIRST KEYNOTE SPEAKER IS A NO-SHOW

The organizers of the Globals Issues Network (GIN) conference had to scramble on Monday morning when scheduled keynote speaker Josephine Kennedy of World Learning failed to show up for her speech.
Kennedy was scheduled to give a presentation at 9:30 AM at George Washington University’s Funger Hall, but she didn’t make it and wouldn’t answer her phone, causing the conference organizers to be forced to make a quick decision on what to do instead.
“Apparently what happened is she wrote the date wrong on her calendar and she booked herself for another event on the same day,” GIN organizer and WIS senior Phoebe Thomas said.
Kennedy’s non-appearance was simply an unfortunate mistake.
“She was very apologetic when she finally called back, and she might be coming to WIS to do something to make up for it,” Thomas said.
Kennedy is the Director of Global Education at World Learning, an organization that helps improve education all around the world.
